Sophia Gilmson, Director
SOPHIA GILMSON, Russian-born pianist and UT Associate Professor of Piano Pedagogy, graduated summa cum laude from the Leningrad (St Petersburg) Conservatory where she studied with Professor Vitaly Margulis. Her awards include: First Prize in the Young Artists Competition in New York City, 1978, followed by a recital in Carnegie Hall; Teachers Grand Prize in the Piano International Recording Competition, 1979; Austin Critics Table Mount Everest Award, 2001; and several Teaching Excellency Awards, including Collegiate Teacher of the Year Award presented by the Texas Music Teachers Association, 2001
She has concertized extensively in her native Russia, Italy, and the United States to high critical acclaim. "Brilliant driving performance," wrote the Houston Post. Her performance of Bach's Goldberg Variations on harpsichord and piano was hailed as "one of the most interesting and thought-provoking performances of this season" by the Austin-American Statesman. Her performances have been broadcast by Radio Leningrad, Radio Vatican, WQXR and WNYC in New York City, among others. She has been active in workshops, master classes and paper presentations throughout the country including the World Piano Pedagogy Conferences and the Music Teachers National Association Convention. Her articles have been published in Keyboard Companion.
